Happy Earth Day!
Here in the States (of United) today is Earth Day. On the radio this morning, Garrison Keillor (on The Writers Almanac) spoke about the beginnings of Earth Day forty years ago on this date.
The environment wasn't exactly a big portion on the government's plate in 1970. Or even a light seasoning. Then, after a huge oil spill tragedy off the west coast (thousands of birds, seals, and other sea life killed), Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin (On Wisconsin!) figured that the world we live on and in deserved a little more attention. Long story made very short, Earth Day was born.
To find out events happening in your area, check out the Earth Day website. There are lots of protests going on these days; Tea Party-ers and Coffee Party-ers alike seem to enjoy standing on opposite sides of the street from each other on a regular basis. Earth Day is a time to celebrate. So, whatever your beverage of choice is, put it down and go celebrate the earth!
