Materialism hour with Pops

I get on the phone and instead of saying "hi, hello, how are you, darling daughter, sweet child of mine, etc."  he immediately launches into this:

26 SHORT SLEEVE DRESS
23 LONG SLEEVE DRESS
18 LONG PANTS
16 UNDERWEAR
33 SHORT SLEEVE TEES
10 SHORTS
3 BATHING SUITS
0 SOCKS
0 UNDERSHIRTS

Yup, Pops is at it again. Clothes counting. He says he can justify the 3 bathing suits, and (of course) the zeroes, but the rest strikes him as overzealous consumption. Momma wants to be sure to add that a negligible amount of those clothes are suitable for public as opposed to house painting (probably accurate).

Truth is, my Pops is one of the least materialistic guys in town. He does have a very soft spot for electronic gadgets that break soon after purchase and have long, tangling cords. He also really likes going grocery shopping. But, in general, the man doesn't covet goods. As you may notice, he doesn't even own socks. I remember going to a wedding when I was a kid and my dad having to borrow socks from my uncle so he looked traditional. In the summer he has bare feet, in the winter, clogs.

His point, though, is duly noted. If a pops like him has that many t-shirts, etc., what about the rest of us? Why do we have so much stuff?

I'm sure it goes back to some survival mentality (whoever has the most wins, can procreate, and therefore continue their lineage). But it manifests itself in odd ways, like huge handbag and shoe collections. I mean, you should see mine. Shoes, especially. My feet just stopped growing, but I kept buying, and couldn't get rid of the old.

I want to work on distinguishing "needs" from "wants." Sometimes fulfilling "wants," but being clear that they are not have-to-haves.

Like socks.
